Marshall Memo: Events at the Strand, and Summer Adventures (2024)

Some 21 events will be taking place during the remainder of the year involving the Historic Moundsville Strand Theatre.

During the month of June the activities include:

– June 8 — A Shrimp Boil to be held at the St. Jude Park in Glen Dale with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the first dump at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $30.

Entertainment will be by Mark Palmer.

– June 17-22 — The Missoula Children’s Theatre Company is making another visit to Moundsville, returning with a free acting workshop for children who have completed kindergarten through age 18 and also senior citizens.

New this year, the intergenerational program Hercules will include actors age 55 and up.

During the week, participants will be immersed in many aspects related to the production of a live stage show, culminating with two public performances.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre residency is being brought by the Strand Theatre with support from the Evan G. Roberts Fund.

“The Adventure Begins at Your Library” is this year’s Summer Reading Program which got underway Monday at the three Marshall County Libraries–Benwood-McMechen, Cameron and Moundsville-Marshall County.

The special programs are all free and open to the public.

They are sponsored by the Evan G. Robert’s Trust through Truist, the Robert Baker family, and the many community donors who provide rewards and prizes. The reading programs are aimed at pre-schoolers through 6th grade.

Those who are not yet independent readers can join in by having a family member read to them or by listening to audio books.

It is recommended that participating children or a parent have a library card.

Children ages birth to 3rd grade can receive a raffle ticket every 10 picture books read.

Third grade to 6th grade participates can receive a prize and a raffle ticket for every three chapter-books they read.

Benwood-McMechen Library will be having guest story hour with Marshall County School Staff on Fridays from 11 a.m. until noon in June and July. On June 7th Arica Holt will be the speaker.

The Marshall County 2023-24 academic year has ended, and so have the careers of 12 Marshall County Schools administrators, teachers, and service personnel who will be retiring.

The retirees, who have a total of 259 years of combined experience, are:

– Deborah Jochum

– Cynthia Lawther

– Robin O’Neil

– Kimberly Poling

– Dirk Roe

– Sherry Toler

The retirees were recognized by superintendent Dr. Shelby Haines and board members during a reception held in their honor at the regularly held board meeting this past Tuesday.

The Marshall County Schools Transportation Department recently held its Annual School Bus Safety Road-E-O.

In the Small Bus Category Emily Hickman won first place with Brittany Hill and Mark Miller placing second and third, respectively.

In the Large Bus division, first through third place were Ashley Becker, Chuck McClure and Dan Gouldsberry.

In the Transit Bus division, Wayne Nulph, Wilson Barnes and Rick Kinkes were first though third place.

Doug Williams, Julie Hawkins and Richard Smith were the top three in the Substitute Bus Driver Division.

The first, second, and third place winners in each category are eligible to participate in the West Virginia School Bus Safety Road-E-O, which will be held June 18 and June 19 at Herbert Hoover High School in Kanawha County.

Among other upcoming events is the 36th annual Greg Yoho Memorial Car Show to be held on June 7th, sponsored by the Marshall Chamber of Commerce.

The hours will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. along Jefferson Avenue, from 2nd to 5th Streets.

There will be 11 cash prizes of $30, along with 11 dealers prizes, also being $30.

This month there will be a Business After Hours at 5 p.m. on June 20, West Virginia Day. It will be hosted by Moundsville Health Care Center located at 2200 Floral Ave.

The Fostoria Glass Society of America will hold it’s 43rd Glass Show June 7-9.

The show is in the Center Building located at the Historic West Virginia Penitentiary, through the gate at 901 Eighth St.

Featured will be glassware by Fostoria, Imperial, Morgantown, Fenton, Cambridge, Helsey, Moon and Star and others including Depression Glassware.

The hours of the event will be be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Events will include a seminar, glass auction and flea market.

Authors Roseanna Dakan Keller and Gary Rider have announced that their next volume of the Marshall County Patriots and Heroes series will be released on Monday, June 3rd at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library from 3-5 p.m. on the main floor.

The authors will sign copies of the book for those attending.

Volume 14 includes a Bataan Death March from Moundsville, a World War II veteran who served in India, other World II veterans from the county, a World I veteran who was killed in action and many more stories of our veterans from the county.

There are 217 pages of pictures and information in this volume.
