Connecting families: new technologies, family communication, and the impact on domestic space
2015 •
Abigail Sellen
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has been a longstanding focus of study in the fields of HCI and CSCW dating back to the first incarnations of the media space in the early 1980s [4]. Since then, this research sphere has explored many different
Technology in Communication for Military Personnel towards Family Bonding
2017 •
Jessica Ong
This is a conceptual study on the impact of external factors on the technology of communication in new media as the medium of communication for family bonding among military personnel. The study reviews issues such as emotional problems, feeling of marginalisation and difficulty in managing households. Hence, the military organisation is an institution where the family is part of the management's responsibility whenever the military personnel encounter challenges, especially when they are serving overseas operations. Subsequently, this study will analyse the new media's role as a medium of communication that consists of interactive conversation, social sharing and reputation of emotions that give direct impact towards the stability of marriage. However, there are not many studies found on the technology factor as a mediator relates to the role of new media as the medium of communication with family bonding. The theories and related literatures will explain how the relationsh...
[Call for papers] Families and ICTs, through trials and life events
Manuel Boutet
This special issue of the journal Reset aims to show how the Internet, and ICTs in general, support families through trials and life events, and how these tools for everyday communication shape family routines, relations, and hierarchies. How are the Internet and ICTs used to build up and tie bonds within families? What do their uses say about the strains of the birth of a child, their growing-up and leaving the parents’ house, of break-ups, geographic mobility, retirement, widowhood, drug dependency, and so on? Reset also invites authors to focus on methodological issues regarding research in this area: what for instance are good ways to collect data such as imprints of ICT uses?

Digital Dwelling: Technology in Couple and Family
Katherine Hertlein
Relationships We are in an unprecedented age of technology. Few articles in family journals address online behavior, intimacy patterns, and influences on the ways couples and families communicate through technology. The purpose of this article is to use a multitheoretical model to describe the process of how technologies are affecting couple and family life. Suggestions for future research and applications are presented.

Connecting Families through Technology
Serena Hillman
Over the last decade, research in the CHI and CSCW communities has expanded in scope to move away from a solely-workplace focus to investigations of the ways in which family members appropriate and make use of technology as a part of domestic life. Our research premise is ‘the home is not the office’; in order to understand how to design technology to fit within and extend the routines of family members, one must carefully consider the intricate nuances of domestic life, including family and friend relationships and the everyday routines people employ. Within this space, our research broadly focuses on the study and design of ubiquitous and mobile technologies for family members. This has included the study of communication and awareness needs for families [1,7], family calendars [8-10], family photo sharing [11,13], and video communication systems for families [2-4,6,13]. We are now building on this research to explore: connecting family members over distance in situations where technology may be limited, the design of systems for families to share health information, and the design of technologies focused on mobile shopping.

When simple technology affords social presence: a case study for remote family members
2008 •
Andrew Perkis
This work explores how simple technologies are being adopted in family life as support for remote family members' interaction. We analyze the feeling of being closer to their remote relatives when using different types of interaction, based on users' report that live in countries geographically far from their families. The users' declarations reveal some benefits from those technologies. Our main goal is to bring insights and suggestions for future developments. By presenting the strategies that people create to improve their feeling of closeness, we expect to contribute to the conception of new technologies aiming to make this communication more effective.
