U.S. President Joe Biden’s proposal for a cease-fire and hostage-release deal to end the war in Gaza was only part of the full package, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Israel is willing to pause hostilities for the purpose of returning hostages but what happens next will be subject to further talks, Netanyahu said in a meeting with parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday, according to a spokesman for his office. There are other details that the U.S. president did not present to the public, he said, without being more specific.

Euro host Germany warms up in 0-0 draw with Ukraine. England, Croatia ease to 3-0 prep wins

  • By GRAHAM DUNBAR - AP Sports Writer

Host Germany, England and Croatia kicked off the true buildup to the European Championship with their first warmup games. But only after Real Madrid capped the club season by signing France captain Kylian Mbappé on Monday. It was about 90 minutes after France captain Mbappé finally confirmed joining the new Champions League winner that Germany put national teams on midsummer’s center stage in an enterprising 0-0 draw with Ukraine. England had a slow start before a second half surge in a 3-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Croatia eased to a 3-0 win over North Macedonia. Germany opens the month-long Euro 2024 against Scotland on June 14.

The Texas Rangers will play without manager Bruce Bochy on their bench. The team announced several hours before its game against Detroit that Bochy is out because of a scheduled personal matter. He is expected back for Tuesday's game. The team didn’t elaborate on his absence. Associate manager Will Venable will be in charge for the series opener. This is the first game Bochy has missed since taking over as the Rangers manager last season, when they won their first World Series title.

A court might hear arguments before the election on Fani Willis' role in Trump's Georgia case

  • By KATE BRUMBACK - Associated Press

An appeals court could hear arguments in October on the appeal of a lower court ruling allowing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to continue to prosecute the election interference case she brought against former President Donald Trump. The Georgia Court of Appeals on Monday docketed the appeals filed by nine defendants in the case, and said that “if oral argument is requested and granted” it is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 4. The court would then have until mid-March to rule, meaning the election interference case almost certainly won’t go to trial before the November election for which Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee.

US Supreme Court sends Arkansas redistricting case back to judges after South Carolina ruling

  • By ANDREW DeMILLO - Associated Press

The Supreme Court has sent a lawsuit challenging Arkansas' 2021 U.S. House map back to a three-judge panel. Justices on Monday ordered a lower court to review the suit following a high court decision against similar claims of bias in a South Carolina redistricting case. The ruling is a setback for a challenge to the way Arkansas' Legislature redrew the lines for a Little Rock-area district. A panel last year dismissed the lawsuit, and residents challenging the district lines appealed. The Supreme Court last month rejected a lower-court ruling that the way South Carolina redrew a district discriminated against Black voters.

  • By RONALD BLUM - AP Baseball Writer

San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is under investigation by Major League Baseball for allegedly betting on baseball and could be subject to a possible lifetime ban, according to a person familiar with the probe. MLB is looking into allegations Marcano bet on games involving the Pittsburgh Pirates while on the team’s injured list last season, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Marcano, 24, has not played since tearing his right ACL last July 24. He was claimed by the Padres off waivers on Nov. 2 and placed on the 10-day injured list March 19.

IRS sues Ohio doctor whose views on COVID-19 vaccinations drew complaints

  • AP

An Ohio doctor who drew national attention when she claimed COVID-19 vaccines made people magnetic is being sued by the federal government. The IRS says she hasn’t paid nearly $650,000 in federal taxes and late fees. The lawsuit filed last month claims Sherri Tenpenny didn’t pay taxes in 2001, 2012 and 2013. Tenpenny, an osteopathic doctor, has been licensed in Ohio since 1984. She told Cleveland.com that she’s tried to settle the tax dispute several times and claims the agency has targeted and harassed her. The lawsuit alleges Tenpenny owes $646,929 overall, most of it late fees and penalties.

With its top editor abruptly gone, The Washington Post grapples with a hastily announced restructure

  • By DAVID BAUDER - AP Media Writer

One of the nation's top news organizations was in some turmoil following a hastily-announced restructuring plan that led to the exodus of the newspaper's executive editor. Sally Buzbee's temporary replacement met with staff members the day after a late-night email announcing the plan went out. Under new publisher Will Lewis, the money-losing newspaper is trying to halt an exodus of readers, and is setting up a new department primarily designed to think of ways to bring more people back. Buzbee had been in the job for only three years during tough economic times for the news business. She reportedly had concerns about how the new structure would work.

Poppi faces lawsuit from consumer who questions its gut health claims

  • By DEE-ANN DURBIN - AP Business Writer

Popular soda brand Poppi is facing a class-action lawsuit filed by a consumer who says its products don’t improve gut health as much as their marketing suggests. In a lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Kristin Cobbs said she purchased Poppi drinks on multiple occasions because of their labels, which stated they were prebiotic sodas and featured the slogan, “Be Gut Happy. Be Gut Healthy.” But Cobbs later found that Poppi drinks contain only around 2 grams of prebiotic agave inulin fiber, which she said is insufficient to provide any real benefit. The Associated Press left an email message with Poppi seeking comment.

Louisiana lawmakers approve surgical castration option for those guilty of sex crimes against kids

  • By SARA CLINE - Associated Press

Louisiana lawmakers gave final approval to a bill that would allow judges the option to order someone to undergo surgical castration when the person is convicted of a sex crime against a child younger than 13. Several states, including Louisiana, currently can order such criminals to receive chemical castration, which uses medications that block testosterone production in order to decrease sex drive. However, surgical castration is a more invasive procedure. The bill approved Monday now heads to the desk of conservative Gov. Jeff Landry. The sponsor of the bill hopes the legislation will serve as a deterrent to such crimes against children.

A U.S. federal court of appeals panel suspended a venture capital firm’s grant program for Black women business owners on Monday, ruling that a conservative group is likely to prevail in its lawsuit claiming that the program is the discriminatory. The ruling against the Fearless Fund is another victory for conservative groups waging a sprawling legal battle against corporate diversity programs that have targeted dozens of companies. San Francisco police have arrested pro-Palestinian demonstrators who occupied a building that houses the Israeli Consulate.
