Job Description

Summary

The Access Advisor works in the Disability Center and has primaryresponsibility for ensuring access and facilitating accommodationsfor students with disabilities. The Access Advisor will evaluateand determine students’ eligibility for accommodations relying onan interactive process as well as third party documentation, asneeded; manage an active caseload of students with disabilities;provide expertise and technical assistance to students, faculty,and other University personnel on disability/accommodation/accessissues and concerns; and arrange and coordinate individualizedaccommodations. The Access Advisor will serve as a contact forcampus faculty and staff, to provide general information regardingthe institution’s rights and responsibilities under the ADA/Section504 and to discuss student needs, both general and specific. TheAccess Advisor may perform a variety of other duties as assigned insupport of the mission of the office.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Through an interactive process with students with disabilities,determine eligibility for and identify appropriate accommodations;develop individual accommodation plans. Review and interpretmedical, neuropsychological, psychological diagnostic reports andother third-party documentation as necessary.
  • Provide ongoing case management, follow-up and support ofaccommodations both in and out of the academic environment.
  • Maintain confidential student files, records andcorrespondence.
  • Consult with faculty and staff to promote and facilitate bestpractices in implementing students’ disability relatedaccommodations and academic adjustments, both in general and inresponse to specific situations.
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director in planning andconducting programs to educate the University community ondisability related issues and the services provided by theoffice
  • Collaborate with other University resources to create andimplement outreach, educational/awareness programs, and networkingactivities on campus and in the wider community.
  • Assist in compilation of annual reports.
  • Represent the office at relevant University and non-universitysponsored events, and various new student orientationprograms.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices, legal mandatesand ongoing research and developments in the area of disabilityaccess and inclusion in higher education.
  • Maintain a high level of cultural fluency and demonstrateknowledge of and commitment to working through issues related todiversity, equity, inclusion, and multiple, intersecting identitiesheld by students.
  • May be responsible for training and supervising studentemployees

Shift

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This position may require evening and weekend hours supportingactivities and programs within the department. Occasionallydivision and campus projects may require additional hours outsideof your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education andexperience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparableknowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

At least two (2) years’ experience working with individuals withdisabilities, particularly with students in higher educationsettings; working knowledge of ADAAA, 504, FERPA, and otherrelevant laws, as well as of best practices with respect todisability services in higher education. Demonstrated flexibilityand proven interpersonal experience working in a professionalenvironment, with experience interacting with faculty, medicalprofessionals, and with diverse student populations; excellentwritten and verbal communication skills; experience with casemanagement; working knowledge of assistive technology and universaldesign principles; and, demonstrated strong computer and analyticalskills.

Also: a proven ability to effectively deal with complex and varyingtasks; excellent interpersonal skills and tact; strong problemsolving skills and ability to exercise sound judgment within areasof responsibility; demonstrated strong organizational skills;ability to work under pressure and with constant interruptions;must be able to maintain strict confidentiality; ability toprioritize workload based on demands of students and the academicschedule; ability to work effectively in a student centeredenvironment; demonstrated ability to work both independently and aspart of an interdisciplinary team.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Range: $21.28 - $27.00 paid hourly on a bi-weekly basis
